Average Calculator

Use this average calculator to find the average of a dataset. Enter your values and click Calculate to get an instant answer with a clear step-by-step solution.

Enter numbers only. Separate values using commas, spaces, tabs, or line breaks.

How to Use the Average Calculator

This average calculator helps you find the average of a list of numbers. It adds all the values and divides the result by the total number of observations in the dataset.

To use the calculator:

  1. Enter your data values in the input box. You can separate values using commas, spaces, tabs, or line breaks. The calculator also allows you to copy and paste values directly from Excel or a text document.
  2. Click Calculate.

The calculator will instantly return the average value of your dataset and show you how it was computed for your dataset.

This tool is suitable when you want to perform simple computations such as the average value of test scores, expenses, prices, ratings, and more. However, if you need to calculate a statistical sample mean or population mean, use the sample and population mean calculator instead. You can also use the arithmetic mean calculator whenever you want to find the arithmetic mean of ungrouped or grouped datasets.

Example 1: Find the Average Using the Calculator

Suppose students in a class obtained the following scores in a math quiz:

72, 80, 85, 90, 88, 76, 66, 56, 58, 94, 82, 67, 60, 76

Find the average quiz score.

Solution

To find the average of these scores using the calculator:

  1. Copy and paste the data values into the calculator input field
  2. Click Calculate.

The calculator will instantly return the average value as 75. This implies that the average score in the math quiz was 75.

What Is the Average?

In math and statistics, the average can be defined as the sum of all values divided by the total number of values in the set. It gives you a quick idea of the typical value in a dataset.

Average Formula

The average formula is: Average = Sum / Count

Where:

  • Sum is the total of all values.
  • Count is the number of values.

How to Find the Average by Hand

To find the average of a set of numbers by hand, follow these steps:

  1. Add all the values to get the Sum.
  2. Count the number of values to get the Count
  3. Apply the average formula

Example. A researcher records the heights, in inches, of 5 adults in a small sample:

64, 66, 68, 70, 72

Find the average height.

Solution

To find the average height manually, we follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Add the values to get the Sum

Sum = 64 + 66 + 68 + 70 + 72

= 340

Step 2: Count the values.

There are 5 values in the dataset. Therefore, Count = 5

Step 3: Apply the average formula.

By definition, the average formula is: Average = Sum / Count

Substituting the values into the formula and solving, we get:

Average = 340 / 5

= 68

Therefore, the average height of adults is 68 inches.

When Can the Average Be Misleading?

The average can be misleading when a dataset contains outliers or extreme values. For instance, in the dataset: 20, 22, 24, 26, 200, the value 200 pulls the average upward. In this case, the average may not represent most of the values very well.

When your data has extreme values, you may also want to use the median calculator to find the middle value or the mode calculator to find the most frequent values. This is because the mode and median are not affected by outliers or extreme values.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this average calculator do?

This average calculator finds the average of a dataset by adding all values and dividing by the number of values. It also shows the sum, count, and step-by-step solution.

How do you calculate the average?

To calculate the average, add all values together and divide by the number of values. In other words, Average = Sum / Count

Is average the same as mean?

In everyday use, average often means the same thing as mean. In statistics, however, you may need to distinguish between the sample mean and population mean.

Is the average affected by outliers?

Yes. Very large or very small values can affect the average. If your data has outliers, compare the average with the median.
